Lab Tests Online Italy
Bridging the gap between Laboratory Medicine and citizens
Under the title ‘Laboratory Medicine and Primary Care’, the Annual Congress of SIBioC, the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry, taking place currently in Rimini, has presented the Italian version of Lab Tests Online as a major contribution from Clinical Laboratory to Family Medicine. The website, a renowned source of information world-wide, has been developed in Italian by SIBioC, in cooperation with the national and European Diagnostics industry associations, Assobiomedica and EDMA.
Lab Tests OnlineIT allows general practitioners and patients to access credible and reliable information about specific lab tests and the related pathologies. It also provides prescription indications and guidance on how to interpret test results, as explains SIBioC President, Dr Mario Plebani.
Assobiomedica Director General, Carlo Mambretti affirms that Lab Tests OnlineIT is intended to bridge the gap between the increasing complexity and availability of laboratory tests and the need of information of all potential users, be those primary users (family doctors) or final users (patients). The final goal is that the site becomes a real tool to improve the visibility of laboratory medicine; and in particular, the lab professionals’ will to provide accurate and timely information to all users, says Dr Gianni Messeri, Coordinator of the SIBioC’s Training & Communications Division.
As its predecessors, the Spanish, German, Hungarian and Polish versions, the Italian site has been created as a result of an agreement signed between the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) and the European Diagnostic Manufacturers Association (EDMA) to translate and adapt the successful American version to fit the needs of the varied European audiences.
All the national sites provide explicit information on clinical laboratory testing and adhere to the same non-commercial and peer-review policies.
Background:
EDMA, the European Diagnostic Manufacturers Association represents National Associations and major companies engaged in the research, development, manufacture or distribution of In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) medical devices in Europe. Through its affiliated National Associations, EDMA represents in total more than 500 companies (or over 700 legal entities) across Europe. The mission of EDMA is to raise awareness of the importance, usefulness and added-value that diagnostic information can provide to healthcare. For this purpose, EDMA cooperates with European institutions, patients groups, trade associations, health professionals and academia to support an appropriate regulatory system, to work towards a realistic economic environment for healthcare in Europe and to be an effective voice in globalisation.
